Station Launch
Umhlobo Wenene FM was established as Radio Bantu, serving the Xhosa-speaking community of the Eastern Cape.
1985
Rebranded as Radio Xhosa
The station was renamed to better reflect its cultural identity and programming focus.
1995
Became Umhlobo Wenene FM
Post-apartheid transformation brought a new name meaning “True Friend” and expanded programming.
2010
Digital Expansion
Launched online streaming and digital platforms, reaching audiences beyond traditional broadcast.
2026
Leading the Eastern Cape
Continues to be the voice of the Eastern Cape with over 4 million weekly listeners.
