More on Lungiswa Lulu Haarmans

Who are you?  ……..

I am Lungiswa  Haarmans, known as Lulu to you my adoring supporters, born over 30 years ago in the historically endowed city,  Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape.  My passion for radio, politics and public speaking grew in my high school years, after being involved in student politics.  I am the last child in my family, preceded by two brothers.  Coming from an ordinary SA family I got to have what was needed for my upbringing but not everything I wanted.  Thanks to my late father’s (who was my best friend) teachings I had to work hard.

What show do you host?

I am currently  the host to the most inspiring, educational, fun and informative fast growing show on Umhlobo  Wenene  FM, Khanya Gqiyazana, weekdays (except Thursdays)  from 09h00 -12h00.  It’s warm, spontaneous but realistic style of delivery on socio economic current issues make me proud to be instrumental in changing stereotypes.  That makes me content because I know my listener learnt something new, regained hope and faith, and through that has begun spreading the love and knowledge which are core fundamentals in nation building.

When and how did your career start?

My lifelong dream of working for a National broadcaster in vernacular came to realization in 2005 – but had been involved in community media since my high school years.   I was an avid listener ka Sis Phozisa Matoti, her calm but witty style of broadcast , moulded me to be the good interviewer I am today, but the flair and warmth Zola Kaso Majiza exuded is epic, still adore her.  A brief meeting with former comrade at a regional congress, and a friend Luzuko Koti who asked me to audition for an English News reader post at Radio Grahamstown started what has proven to be my lifelong passion.

What have you achieved thus far within your career? What are your career highlights?

Besides raising two healthy happy boys, I was a finalist at the SABC News Awards, Best Current Affairs Anchor (2009), awarded a Certificate by the Voice of America  and USTTI on Radio Presenting, Studio Design and Acoustic in Washington DC (1998).  Editor at BTFM (a campus based station at the then Border Technikon) when I was doing my Journalism studies.

Besides radio, what do you do?

I’m an excellent panelist, facilitator, guest speaker and renowned MC.  I have been MC on world events, such as the CT International Jazz Festival, and Buyelekhaya Music Festival; and also Sonke Gender Justice Male and Youth Dialogues and relationship Seminars, as a panelist and facilitator.  My passion for women issues has seen me hosting national and provincial public and corporate events.

“You will never get a second chance to make the first impression”
