Host of Apha na Phayana/Ziyawoyike Umbethe/Uphendlo Ndaba Zeveki

Who are you?  ……..

I am a proud product of a small town in the south-eastern corner of the Free State, Zastron otherwise known as Matlakeng. The name Matlakeng, means a place of vultures, as the beautiful mountain that ushers you into this town is populated by vultures, among the animals of the wild. I have always been a dreamer from my humble beginnings.  I have been an inquisitive individual, thus my interest in the media-communication industry.

What show do you host?

I host the Saturday morning current affairs magazine programme - Ziyawoyika Umbethe and Thursday show Apha na Phayana, as well as the Sunday evening discussion programme – Uphendlo Ndaba. I hope my listeners have a sense of having learned something from being part of these shows... a sense of clarity on whatever socio-political matter that may arise.

When and how did your career start?

I cut my teeth in broadcasting in 1999 at the SABC external station – Channel Africa.  It is here I was trained as an on-field journo, news writer, current affairs producer and technical producer. I give credit to Ms Promise Lekalake - the lady who believed, moulded and launched me into this career. Prior to joining Channel Africa I had received training and got a chance to be an on-air talent with a community radio station, Can-I fm. I had a stint as a new reader for Y-fm and also read for Radio 2000.

What have you achieved thus far within your career? What are your career highlights?

I was part of the initial team that started with the news programme called The World Today, on the then SABC International. The response I got when I was a guest DJ on the Voice of Soweto (Zak Dakile’s show) and Lesedi fm (Chomane Chomane’s show) stand out for me – because they cemented my drive to pursue my passion...radio...

Besides radio, what do you do?

I am an easy going person who likes reading. I regard myself as a student of life – learning from each and every experience...
