Gqeberha, Friday, 28 October 2022 Multi-award winning Umhlobo Wenene FM announced the launch of its radio drama competition today. The competition aims to give a new generation of storytellers a chance to tell their stories. It is open to aspiring drama producers, script writers and actors that want to take their creative ability to the next level. The station’s current drama series, “Ithini na lento”, is one of the highest-ranking shows on the station from an audience perspective and the station’s intention is to open up this platform as enabler for new artists to be developed and nurtured.


The competition is open to all South African writers, producers and drama actors. Actors are required to submit a one-minute long monologue in isiXhosa to @umhlobowenenefm ‘s  Facebook page under the hashtag #UWFMDrama , while producers enter by creating a ten-minute radio drama and writers must submit a one-page summary of their story with two- scenes. Both entrants should submit to . The theme for all submissions is “Gender based violence” and the content must be entertaining, informative and educational.  No adaptions of existing material, stage dramas, or stories previously published will be accepted.


The closing date for submissions is Friday, 11 November 2022 at 17:00 and ten finalists will be announced on 21 November 2022. Only one entry per writer will be accepted. As part of the development and career-building initiatives by the station,  the chosen top five actors, three scriptwriters and two producers will be expected to attend a workshop that will enable them to receive constructive feedback, support and input from industry professionals, such as Lusanda Mbane, known for her roles on Generarions, Muvhango and Scandal amongst others. Xolani Mali, who made waves through Academy Award-winning movie Hotel Rwanda will also share tips with the entrants to ensure that the initiative adds value to each finalist’s creative process.


Listeners will be able to vote for the finalists from 28 November 2022, and a winner will be announced on 12 December 2022. The winners from the three categories will each win R15,000 cash as well as a contract with the station forf the duration of a year. The listener with the most votes towards the competition will also walk away with a R15,000 cash prize.



Eastern Cape Business Manager, Loyiso Bala, is excited about the launch of this campaign. “Dramas are a creative outlet that not only entertains our listeners, but informks them while building their language skills. Our goal is to be able to play the role of an incubator for the creative and entertainment industry by bringing creatives together and providing them with tools and support to thrive”, said Bala.
